What's New

New charts, pages and corrections to Global Tropical Cyclones, newest first. The data itself updates every day; see the date at the foot of each page. For definitions and sources, see the Methodology page.

  1. Display

Every chart's Download PNG now carries a title and subtitle naming the chart, the region and the years. On-page chart headings now match the downloaded titles.

  2. Display

Chart labels no longer clip or run into each other. The first season bar now clears the axis labels, the end labels on the running storm totals fit, and the cumulative ACE chart's axis now stretches when a season outruns it, as the 2026 NE Pacific season did. An automatic check now tests every page at four screen widths after each update.

  3. New feature

A "Get notified when this data updates" link now sits beside each data-through date. Downloaded charts now credit Roger Pielke Jr. and Ryan Maue.

  4. Reuse terms

Every page now carries a copyright notice and a link to the reuse terms. Every CSV download now opens with its source and licence.

  5. Open data

The season summaries and the full storm list are now published as public JSON files: season_summary.json and storms.json.

  6. Note

The home page's Global ACE card now explains why its figure differs from the Global page's season table. The card counts the calendar year to date, while South Indian and South Pacific seasons run July to June.

  7. Fix

Global per-season pages, such as the 2026 season, no longer return a page-not-found error.

  8. Correction

Storms still active in the Atlantic and Pacific basins tracked by NHC were being counted twice, which doubled the NE Pacific's 2026 season ACE (109.7, now 54.9). Storms crossing 135°E are now split between the South Indian and South Pacific basins at the point they cross. While NCEI blocks automated access to IBTrACS, current-season storms in the NW Pacific, South Indian and South Pacific are filled in from climatlas.com's real-time feed.

  9. New feature

A Briefings panel on the home page previews each downloadable briefing.

  10. New address

The site moved to global-tropical-cyclones.com. On This Day now picks the storm that peaked on the date, so one long-lived storm no longer holds the spot for a week or more.

  11. Fixed spurious lines cutting across the Global, NH and SH track maps. Added On This Day, and Global and Atlantic year-to-date ACE against the 1980–present average, to the home page's What's New box.

  12. Site redesign: a new editorial style, a What's New box on the home page, and a Links page.

  13. Added per-storm pages with zoomed track maps, a landfall drill-down list, and CSV/XLSX export on every table.
